GROUP VISITS

View of Ditchling from Lodge Hill

The museum provides a focal point for visitors to the area and offers Guided walks for groups together with a visit to the museum. In the village centre are many buildings of historic and architectural interest and fine views of the Downs.

Walk down the High Street and pass the home of Eric Gill whose arrival a century ago began the long tradition of art and craftsmanship in the village.

In South Street is 'The Jointure', Sir Frank Brangwyn's house and studio and in Lewes Road 'Cleves' where Edward Johnston and his family lived.

At the crossroads on the former site of the Ditchling Press the silversmith Anton Pruden continues the tradition of his grandfather Dunstan Pruden.

Visit the 14th century church and churchyard and the War Memorial across the Green where work by Gill and other 20th century craftsmen blends with the stonework of their forebears.

Find out about Ditchling and its people in the days of sheep drovers and hay wagons and follow the Twitten to the Old Meeting House, where Dissenters gathered and built a chapel and the first village school.

We offer:

  • Pre-planning visits for group organisers and, with enough warning, can tailor walks for specialist interests relevant to the museum collection and Ditchling village.
  • A guided walk of the village lasting approximately one hour and a visit to the museum with an introductory talk or Gallery tour of the current exhibition.
  • Visits can be arranged on a Monday or an evening when the museum is otherwise closed.

After your walk enjoy tea or coffee and homemade cakes in the museum's Eat your Cake café and browse in the shop for something to take home.
