The Art of the Silversmith: Dunstan Pruden & his legacy
Wednesday 22 September: Lecture starts 7.30pm     £ 7.00
Photo

The silversmith Dunstan Pruden joined The Guild of St Joseph & St Dominic on Ditchling Common in 1932. His work, which included the famous Pruden Chalice in the Metropolitan Cathedral, Liverpool, influenced a whole generation of craftworkers. He also taught some of the most famous modern silversmiths, such as Gerald Benney, at Brighton College of Art. To mark Ditchling Museum's Silver Jubilee this lecture will explore the work of Dunstan Pruden, his legacy, and Anton Pruden's continuation of his grandfather's work within Ditchling today. Anton Pruden is the third generation of silversmiths within the Pruden family and he had his first experience of working in silver at a very early age in his grandfather's workshop on Ditchling Common. In 1988 Anton Pruden and Rebecca Smith set up Pruden & Smith in Ditchling. Booking essential

Letterpress Printing
Monday 4 October: 10.30am - 3.00pm      £ 20.00

This workshop will introduce participants to the history of letterpress printing and to the Stanhope printing press through a practical workshop. You will be given the opportunity to set type and produce a small piece of print using the press (the very one used by St Dominic's Press). The session will also give you the chance to handle St Dominic's Press pieces from the Museum's Collection. The event will be led by Jo Roberts, a practicing artist who describes herself as ‘commentariographer' - ‘someone who writes, mediates, ponders, portrays or records'. In 2008 Jo took up residency at Ditchling Museum and during this time worked with the Evan Gill Collection and the Stanhope Press. For six weeks she developed a body of work called Public Notices which she produced on the Stanhope Press. Her approach to printing is a serendipitous one! Booking essential

Sunday 21 November: Lecture starts 7.00pm     £ 10.00

The artist and craftsman Philip Hagreen (1890-1988) spent much of his working life in Ditchling. He worked as a member of The Guild of St Joseph & St Dominic in 1923-24 and then again from 1932-55. The individuals, ideas and environment that he encountered also inspired much correspondence. Lottie Hoare's talk will use his letters, wood engravings and carvings to identify how life in Ditchling shaped his creative work and his thinking. Lottie Hoare is a writer and teacher. She has been involved with research work connected with Ditchling since 1992, when she wrote the text to accompany Stephen Pepler's re-discovered childhood illustrations, Stephen's History of Saints.
